What does a business consultant do?

I always get the exact same question whenever I get acquainted with new people. And I always reply, with a smile on my face "The question is what can a Business Consultant like me HELP you and YOUR business with?"

I place emphasis on the term "help" and "your" in that line. (I hope you can imagine what it sounds like.) What happens next is a series of questions and answers which can simply be summarized into a few key points enumerated below.

First, you as an entrepreneur is going to build your business with a limited budget, consultants help you stay within that budget. A business consultant provides you expertise for your business, particularly in planning and operations.

Second, you want your business to maximize profit. Of course you want to maximize profit. Why else are you venturing into business, right? You might want to increase sales, expand your reach, build up brand awareness, or enhance customer loyalty but you don't know where to start. This is where experience and expertise comes in, a business consultant has got your back.

Third, you are planning on something and you need a different perspective. Have you ever encountered a situation where you are undecided and it is hard to arrive at a very smart decision? I'm quite sure you have experienced that at least a fair few times. You can ask other people, but then again, the perspective of one with expertise is much more assuring.

Lastly, you're facing problems and you do not know what to do. You might have problems in your sales, advertising, promotions, image, and other aspects of your business but you just do not have the slightest idea on how to address it. Just like what happens when you get sick and don't know what to do, you consult your doctor. Why should you treat your business otherwise? This is why being a business consultants is a job. And that job is to help you and your business.
