Major Considerations Before Writing Your Thesis

Planning the thesis is one activity which is often skipped by most students.

DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE. Failing to make a plan is the number one reason why writing a thesis gets a lot of problems while it is being written out.
Writing a thesis is similar to any other project, it starts out with a plan and everything that comes next must follow the plan. However, most students today fail in doing this crucial step in writing their thesis which is why they face much more problems along the way.

Now, you might be asking "How do I make such a plan for my thesis?" or "What must be included in the plan?"...

The answer to those are also questions which you need to fill in for yourself. These are the major considerations which you must first identify before you begin writing. Below is a list of these and how it affects your thesis.

  1. The Approach. This determines how you want to study the topic of your thesis. There are at least two feasible approaches which you can take for any study. Commonly, you might want to approach it coming from the front end or coming from the back end.

For example, if we are to write a thesis about the impact of social media towards advertising and sales, we can either approach it coming from the front end as its impacts are experienced by the users of social media platforms who are the audiences of the companies that advertise and sell stuff ; or approach it from the back end as the said impacts benefit the marketing activities of those companies who use social media platforms as part of their marketing efforts.

The way you'd choose which kind of approach affects the perspective of your thesis, as well as other key elements including the frameworks, the flow of literature, the data collection methods, upto the results and recommendations.
  2. The Perspective. The perspective is how you want to look at and study the topic. As mentioned, this is affected by the approach and determines from which angle are you going to look at something.

Taking in consideration the options on the approach portion, if the front end option was selected, then the study would be looked into through the perspective of the end users.

The perspective of the thesis further determines what kind of frameworks may be used, as well as the flow of literature, the data collection methods, and most importantly, results and recommendations since the study was taken from an end user perspective.
  3. The Flow. This refers to the manner of presentation which the thesis is going to take. There are two commonly used flows when writing a thesis, these are the macro-to-micro or the micro-to-macro. If it sounds unfamiliar to you, instructors have been known to use the terms global-to-local and local-to-global in its stead.

Using the same example in the perspective section, a more suited flow would be the macro-to-micro since the study is seen from the eyes of the end users. The discussions would then be aligned with how advertising and selling using social media platforms affect end customers.

If you may notice, the flow further determines  and places emphasizes which literature are to be included.
  4. The Scope. This consideration, as the name suggests, refers to how far and how deep your study is going to be. The scope identifies a few key elements in the thesis including the locale which determines where is the study going to be implemented; the targets which determines who or what your study is about; the range which determines up to which sets of information you need to complete the thesis, the methods which determines how the sets of information are going to be collected and analyzed.

Using the same example above, the scope of that thesis may be spanning an entire municipality or even an entire country; targeting residents who have are using social media platforms; and acquiring information regarding how advertising in social media has affected their purchasing patterns and preferences.

The scope greatly affects the data collection methods and processes. It adjusts the content of data collection instruments as well.
